FAQs
- What is gold filled jewelry?
- Gold filled jewelry is an alternative to solid karat gold jewelry. While gold filled jewelry is not solid gold it is completely different from gold plated jewelry.
- Gold filled metal is made by mechanically fusing a layer of real gold on the top and bottom of a base metal, typically brass or copper. By law all gold filled jewelry must contain at least 5% gold content. This gives Gold filled jewelry all the benefits of solid gold at a fraction of the cost.
- Will my gold filled jewelry fade and/or tarnish?
- No, your gold filled jewelry will not tarnish and the gold color will not fade away. The outer layer is real gold and will stay as such unless damaged. Gold filled jewelry contains exponentially more gold content than gold plated jewelry—which is known to easily fade and tarnish.
- Can I get my jewelry wet?
- Yes, you are safe to shower in your jewelry as well as wearing to the pool or beach.
- But it is generally advised for jewelry wearers not to wear any jewelry in to pools because of the chemicals in the water.
- How do I care for my gold filled jewelry?
- For the most part you care for gold filled jewelry the same way you would gold jewelry. While gold filled jewelry does not tarnish it may pick up dirt over time, you can combat this by washing in warm soapy water then drying and storing in dry cool place.
- To keep your jewelry in its best state you can remove before showering or swimming as a precaution but gold filled metal is water safe.
- While I sleep with most of my jewelry on, I would recommend to not sleep in necklaces or body chains because they can snag and break while you are sleeping.
- Take care when using lotions and perfumes as chemicals in some products may affect the metal.
- For the most part Gold filled jewelry is pretty durable and can last with little care but if you follow these simple guidelines you can extend the life of your jewelry.
- Is gold filled jewelry fake?
- This answer is complicated and is relative to your point of view.
- If by fake you mean is it solid karat gold, then sure because gold filled jewelry isn’t completely karat gold, it has a core of another metal.
- If by fake you mean that your jewelry will tarnish, fade or turn your skin green then no!
- All gold filled jewelry contains at least 5% gold
*Note
Custom jewelry made using gold filled sheet metal i.e. the birth year, name and initial pendants and earrings will experience tarnishing around the edges of the piece. This is due to the limitation of working with gold filled, where the top and bottom are layered in gold while the middle is another metal. When the custom pieces are cut the base metal is then exposed at the edges. The front and back of the piece will remain untarnished and will not fade.
